IOS 9.3.5 is an Important Security Update That You Must Install

Apple has released a security update to iOS today, responding to three previously unknown zero-day exploits.

The activist, Ahmed Mansoor, did not tap on the link, and instead forwarded it to Citizen Lab.

Immediately after discovering Trident, Citizen Labs and Lookout Security notified Apple.

Security researchers on Thursday announced they had discovered a new piece of iPhone malware that allowed attackers to see virtually everything on your iPhone.

To prevent this from happening again, Apple released an update for iOS 9 that patches up these vulnerabilities.

An Israel-based “cyber war” company, NSO Group, was found by researchers at Citizen Lab and Lookout to be using zero-day exploits to target a human rights activist.

The exploits work by remotely jailbreaking the device to secretly download the spyware – which can then access the iPhone’s camera, microphone, and messages.

An attack on a fully patched, current-model iPhone 6 had not been detected before, though they had been considered possible for major governments, which generally have more surveillance resources at their disposal.

According to Privacy International, NSO Group has sold its products to clients in Mexico and in Panama – but little is known about other deals involving the company which is said to be worth more than $1bn. “The agreements signed with the company’s customers require that the company’s products only be used in a lawful manner”. Lookout, a mobile security company that helped with the investigation, said the Trident exploit chain is a tailor-made for targeted attacks.

However, Citizen Lab suggested that the spy tool isn’t actually untraceable because it was able to track the network of sites that host the malware.

If you are anxious that you could be affected by this vulnerability, the best thing to do is download the latest version of iOS to protect yourself against potential security exploits.

An NSO spokesman said the company had no knowledge of Mr. Mansoor’s case. Oddly, NSO Group is owned by an American venture capital firm named Francisco Partners Management.

The Israeli embassy in Washington did not respond to an email seeking comment.

The apparent discovery of Israeli-made spyware being used to target a dissident in the United Arab Emirates raises awkward questions for both countries. According to Citizen Lab, in 2011, he was targeted with FinFisher’s FinSpy spyware, and in 2012 he was targeted with Hacking Team’s Remote Control System.
